When traveling with your pet internationally, there are different health requirements specific to each country. Regulations can cause confusion and ultimately delay pet transport if they are not met to the countries specifications. Each country has different laws for entering with pets whether by ground or air.
Each species of animal has different regulations when entering an international country. The most common regulation for international pet transportation is for each pet to have a USDA Health certificate. This must be signed by a licensed Veterinarian within 72 hours of arrival in the international country. Some countries require you to have this endorsed by the APHIS office before departure. Canada is one of the few countries that does NOT require this step.
Ground Pet Transport into Canada
Dogs less than 8 months old and unaccompanied during transport, must obtain a health certificate by a licensed USDA Veterinarian within 72 hours of entering Canada. They must also have a current rabies vaccination and certificate verifying this information. If your dog is less than 3 months old, and cannot receive a rabies vaccination, then they will only require the health certificate. However, proof of their age must be on the pets health certificate.
Dogs accompanied by their owner, and or older than 8 months during transport, do NOT require a health certificate for importation to Canada. The only regulation is that they are up to date on their rabies vaccination and have a certificate for proof.
Transporting your cat into Canada is very similar to transporting your dogs. When transporting your Cat to Canada, it is required to have a rabies vaccination. If your kitten is younger than 3 months and unable to receive the rabies vaccination, only proof of age is required. These regulations are for both cats traveling alone or accompanied.
Air Pet Transport into Canada
The listed requirements above are for air pet transport as well. However, airlines have their own specifications for pet transport. A health certificate may be required for transport even though it is not a regulation that Canada has for importation.
